    Servo Control - Analysis and Design (DT307)

    SynopsisThis is a course of continuing education for working engineers in technical fields of servomechanism and servo control. It covers the fundamentals of feedback system and control, and shows the link between theory and practice.

    This course is intended for practicing engineers, reliability engineers and designers concerned with practical aspects of servo control. The course will provide guidance relevant to the analysis of servo control loop, and the use of relevant equipments and software. It will also highlight some practical insight of issues related to servo control systems such as tracking error, stability etc.

    This course emphasizes on the understanding of the relevant phenomena and concepts in order for the participants to gain the ability to appreciate and address a wide range of practical problems insightfully.

    The course instructor will draw on his extensive experience to illustrate the subject matter with practical examples.

    PrerequisiteTechnical background or working experience in mechatronics, mechanical, or control engineering disciplines. Although the participants are not required to have in-depth knowledge in this field, some prior acquaintance with dynamic systems and control should be helpful.

    Day 2
    • Control system: Feed forward versus Feedback
    • Advantages of feedback control
    • Proportional, Derivative and Integral control
    • Time domain response with feedback control
    • Tuning of control parameters
    • Factors affecting performance of feedback control
    • Stability issues with feedback control
    • Frequency domain analysis of stability
    • Compensator design

    Day 3
    • Controller implementation using microprocessor or DSP
    • Effect of sampling
    • Digital implementation of analog controller
    • Direct design of digital controller
    • Case Study 1: Position control using DC motor
    • Case Study 2: Head positioning servomechanism in hard disk drive
